Homecoming 2014 – BG Lions improve to 4 – 1 in 67 – 21 win against Riesel Indians
Indians invaded our town to attack
On a warm and humid Friday night.
We needed to knock them flat on their back
And our Lions were up for the fight!
A Homecoming Queen was named at the break
While the home team the lead they did savor.
By the end of the contest, for goodness sake,
The scoreboard was well in our favor.
Next up is the Panthers who soon will aspire
To consume more peppers than we.
But our team’s motivation and true desire
Is winning the game, they will see.

After falling last week to a tough Grapevine Faith team, the Blooming Grove Lions looked to get back on the winning track on Homecoming Friday against the Riesel Indians. The Lions wasted no time.
BG took the opening kickoff and drove down the field for an early touchdown on a 1-yard run by Jr. Juanya Pyburn.
The extra point was missed, giving them a 6-0 lead. On Riesel’s first possession they appeared to be in trouble deep in their own territory but that all changed when Sr. Brealyn Williams caught a short pass and rambled 83 yards for a TD, putting the Indians on top 7-6. Their lead would be very short-lived.
On the Indians’ next possession they fumbled the ball, which was quickly scooped up and returned for a 40-yard TD by Jr. Jared Obenour, making the score 13-7 in favor of BG.
The play was only the first of many quality defensive plays by Obenour, who also was in on a sack that pinned the Indians near their own goal line. He later sacked Indians So. QB Brooks Embry in the 2nd quarter for a BG safety.
After the Obenour TD, coach Lawrence Williams called for the first of many trick plays on the evening when the Lions surprised Riesel with the successful conversion of an onside kick.
BG quickly drove the ball 48 yards and scored on a TD pass to Sr. Dalton Blake, making the score 20-7.
By the time the 1st quarter whistle blew the Lions found themselves in command by a score of 27-7.
Early in the 2nd quarter, the Lions got the ball back again when Jr. Keller Southard recovered another Indians fumble. BG was then forced into a 4th down and lined up in punt formation but instead of punting, the ball was snapped to Juanya Pyburn who kept the drive alive with a first down run. Dalton Blake then passed to Jr. Tyler Baumgartner for a TD that was called back due to a BG offensive penalty.

Tyler Ellis was intercepted at the Riesel 2-yard line. However, Riesel was unable to move the ball at all and eventually gave up a safety when Obenour sacked their QB in the end zone, making the score 29-7.

Later in the quarter BG took over on their own 47-yard line and muscled the ball down-field on an impressive drive capped off by a 19-yard TD run by Jr. Landon Carpenter.

During the drive, Juanya Pyburn took over at QB for a few plays after Tyler Ellis suffered a brief injury. Ellis returned to the game on the next possession with BG in the lead 36-7. Late in the 2nd quarter BG fumbled the ball which was picked up by Brealyn Williams who scored his second TD of the 1st half for the Indians.

BG then fumbled again on its’ next possession and Riesel threatened to score again but their drive stalled at the Lions’ 2-yard line. BG took a 36-14 lead into the half.
During the halftime Homecoming festivities, Sr. A’Lara Smith was named 2014 Homecoming Queen. Congratulations to A’Lara who plans to attend Texas Women’s University to become a high school math teacher.

The Indians couldn’t get much of anything to go their way in the 2nd half. They struggled on offense and defensively had no answer for the Lions’ relentless and diverse offensive attack. Coach Williams kept the Indians on their heels the entire game with various offense sets, trick plays and numerous passing and running packages. The Lions ran a very efficient no-huddle offense for much of the 2nd half. BG did not punt one time in the game. Perhaps the most exciting play came in the 3rd quarter when Tyler Ellis hit Juanya Pyburn in the corner of the end zone for a phenomenal TD catch.
Pyburn, who was draped with two Indian defenders, went up high for the catch, maintained possession of the ball and kept his feet inbounds. The score put BG on top 43-14 but the Lions were not through feasting on the Indians.
Early in the 4th quarter, Tyler Ellis split the uprights with a 43-yard FG, putting BG up 46-14.

The win improved the Lions’ record to 4-1. It was a positive team effort in every phase of the game, proving the Lions’ had no hangover from last week’s loss to Grapevine Faith. Coach Williams had the team prepared and implemented a game plan that Riesel just couldn’t match. The BG defense kept Riesel QB Brooks Embry under pressure, keeping him from sustaining much of an offensive threat. However, it was the Lions’ offense that gave the hometown crowd the most to cheer about. It was their highest scoring output of the season and the team was very efficient with their quick snap, no-huddle offense. On the ground and in the air, QB Tyler Ellis and crew churned and burned the visiting Indians in a very impressive win.
The Lions have a week to rest before starting district play against the Maypearl Panthers on Friday, October 10th at 7:30 pm in Blooming Grove. Maypearl is currently 2-3 on the season after losing to Westwood 38-12 on Friday.
