The paper that stopped

Twenty-five issues, seven hundred and thirty-four pages, and no last one.

Written by Robert Phipps  ·  Photograph by Cindie Phipps

The Community News came out of the library on Fordyce Street from March 2009 to May 2012. Nobody knew the May issue was the last one, which is why it does not say goodbye.

It was printed on the library's own equipment at two cents a page, six hundred copies, four hundred and ninety-five of them carried out to thirty-one places — sixty to A-1 Grocery, fifty to the post office, forty to the newsstand by the door. April 2009 cleared sixty-three dollars. Through a commercial printer the same issue would have lost a hundred and sixty-six. There was never a version of this that worked without the library.

The plan was thirty sections and nineteen people to feed them. What it did not survive was one person carrying a monthly deadline. All seven hundred and thirty-four pages are here, as printed, and so are the two single-page issues that appeared in 2015 and stopped again.

The whole run is in the archives, with three generations of the town's website.
