Blooming Grove Lions improve to 3-0 in 48-0 shutout in Italy
The Blooming Grove Lions varsity football team made another impressive showing in last night’s non-conference game vs the Italy Gladiators in their first shutout of the season, routing the Gladiators with a score of 48-0.

The Lions put up 465 yards of offense with a strong running game. The steadfast defensive team held the Gladiators to less than 100 yards.
Lions QB, kicker & WR Tyler Ellis scored two TD’s on the ground and completed two field goals for 25 & 31 yards.
Juanya Pyburn, Lions QB & WR scored three touchdowns, making this his third game in a row with two or more scores.
The Lions are here to play for keeps.

Lion’s Head Coach Lawrence Williams said he is proud of the success that the team has had thus far, but cautioned against taking wins for granted.

In an interview Saturday, Coach Williams gave us some insight into his feelings about the team and the season.
Q – How do you feel about the success the team has had so far this season?
A – “These kids are coming to fight and practice every day – working hard and getting better. We have high hopes for this season.”
Q – What can we expect to see next week vs Grapevine Faith?
A – “They are a good team coming in 3-0 as well. They bring an offense that’s the opposite of our last 3 opponents, in that they have a strong passing game, throwing the ball about 70% of the time. They have a good defense. This game will be a good test for us before going into the district games. We’ve played 3 teams so far that like to run the ball – they don’t throw the ball very much, and now we’re going to have to focus on covering well. Our secondary is going to have to have a good game in order for us to have a good chance to win. “

Q – What do you think about the 2 sophomores for Grapevine, QB & CB, #12 Cam Roane and RB & CB, #31 Keyshawn Wyatt?
A – “Yeah, he (Cam Roane) is the real deal. He’s a good left handed quarterback and he’s not just a throwing threat, he also runs the ball well. We will have our hands full.” As to Keyshawn Wyatt, he’s very shifty and fast. He’s probably the best running back we’ve seen thus far. This is by far the best team we will be facing this season.”
Q – What are the keys to success against Grapevine Faith?
A – “We have to do what we do offensively. We have to be effective at running and throwing the ball. Defensively, we’re not going to shut down their passing game, but we will have to limit them in what they get. They’re a good YAC (yards after the catch) team. Once they get the ball, they make things happen. If we are a good and sure tackling team, I think it will be a good night for us.”

Q – What are your thoughts on your top 2 scorers Juanya Pyburn and Tyler Ellis?
A – “Going into the season we knew we had these two, and I think people believe that’s all we have. But like, last night for example – Italy tried to take away Juanya early. That opened up opportunities to use other weapons we have. When they try to stop that, we can go back to him. We have a good offensive team with several talented players. You can’t stop us by shutting down one person.

Next week’s match-up against Grapevine Faith Lions at home could be Blooming Grove’s toughest challenge to date. Both teams are unbeaten so far this season, with records of 3-0.
The Grapevine Lions have a strong offense with a couple of key players to keep an eye on. Sophomore QB & CB Cam Roane (#12) has racked up 545 yards of passing in their first three games, averaging 272 yards per game, including 6 TD passes. He has thrown 49 passes for 39 completions with a .735 average.
Another player to keep your eye on is Grapevine’s Keyshawn Wyatt (#31) who is averaging 11.5 yards per carry and 137 yards per game.
